Compound Steam Engine

Compound Steam Engine Points : What is Compound Steam Engine, Definition Working of Compound Steam Engine Steam engine performance can be improved by increasing pressure and temperature of steam ingoing steam engine and lower back pressure. While the lower of back pressure is partial through the atmospheric pressure in case of non condensing engine and through condenser pressure lest of condense engines. Thus, rising temperature and pressure of steam at inlet to steam engine can be use for get better efficiency of steam engine. But high pressure at inlet and low down back pressure effect into number of convenient difficulty for example; size of cylinder has to be of big amount and should have weighty structure in order to stand by large pressure difference, large volume after increase and higher mechanical stresses, propensity of condensation loss and leak loss gets amplified, large temperature dissimilarity causes extreme thermal stresses, heavy structure pose trouble in balancing etc.

In arrange to rise above these difficulty in its place of realizing expansion in single steam engine over one steam engine cylinders are working for achieve total expansion as of high inlet pressure to low back pressure. So for any certain expansion percentage (that is ratio of high pressure to low pressure) total expansions occurs in excess of one engine cylinders sequentially. The arrangement in which expansion occurs in two or more engine cylinders consecutively is call compound steam engine. Compounding is thus occurrence of realizing expansion in more than one steam engine cylinders in series. In case two cylinder engines first cylinder is call high pressure cylinder (HP cylinder) and second cylinder is call low pressure cylinder (LP cylinder). In case three cylinders engine cylinders shall be call as high pressure (HP), intermediate pressure (IP) and low pressure (LP) cylinders.
