Working of Cylindrical Grinding Machine

Working of Cylindrical Grinding Machine Points : Working of Cylindrical Grinding Machine, The cylindrical grinder is designed to give three movements which are very important. These three movements are: 1. Rotating the work-piece on its axis.
2. Moving the work horizontally back and forth in front of the grinding wheel (traverse movement).
3. Moving the wheel into the work-piece and away (in-feed).

In this type of machine, two methods are mostly used for holding the work. One is to clamp the work in a rotating chuck; the other is to rotate the work between center points. In either case, the rotating work is reciprocated (traversed) across the face of a comparatively narrow abrasive wheel. After each table traverse, the wheel moves toward the work a distance equal to the depth of metal to be removed. Crossways under the wheel head provide for feeding the wheel a few ten-thousandth of an inch toward the work after each traverse of the worktable. The worktable is driven, by an electric motor mounted with the head on the reciprocating worktable. A similar self contained motor drives the grinding wheel.
Note: The following special types of cylindrical grinders are also used for different nature of work.
1. Roll Grinders 2. Piston Grinders 3. Plunge-cut Grinders
(i) Ordinary plunge-cut grinders (ii) Crankpin grinders
(iii) Piston grinders (plunge-cut types) (iv) Cam-shaft grinder
4. Form Grinders
(i) Thread Grinders (ii) Gear Grinders
