Slotting Milling Operation Points : Slotting Milling Operation, Sequence of Operations, Caution: Slotting, is similar to slitting except that the cut is made only part way through the work. The slot in the head of the screw’ is a sample of slotting.
Sequence of Operations 1. Mount the cutter as for conventional milling. Use a sharp cutter of a width suitable for the job. Note the difference between a slotting cutter and a conventional slitting saw.
2. Set the machine for the correct .cutting speed. Use the slowest feed possible. Increasing it if warranted by conditions.
3. Align the vise and mount the work.
4. Position the cutter and make a light cut. Check the trial cut and make adjustments if necessary. Stop the machine before making measurements and adjustments.
5. Adjust the work for the proper depth cut.
6. Apply coolant and make the cut.
Caution: Do not stand directly in line with the cutter. despite all precautions, saws shatter occasionally, and can cause serious injury.
