2. Rack and Pinion Type 1. Linkage Steering System A linkage steering system, consists of the following parts: 1. Steering Wheel It is used to rotate steering shaft that passes through steering column. 2. Steering Shaft It transmits turning motion from steering wheel to steering gearbox 3. Steering Column It supports steering wheel and steering shaft. 4. Steering Gear Box It connects steering gear box to steering knuckles and wheels. 5. Steering Linkage It connects steering gear box to steering knuckles and wheels. 6. Ball Sockets These allow linkage arms to swivel up and down for suspension action and from left to right for turning. 2. Rack and Pinion Steering System Along with rack and pinion this system also uses, a steering wheel, steering column and steering shaft. These components transfer the drivers turning efforts to gears in steering gear assembly. Other than the above parts, the major components of a rack and pinion steering system are: 1. Pinion Gear It is rotated by steering wheel and steering shaft. It has teeth that mesh with teeth on r 2. Rock It is a long steel bar with teeth along one section. It slides side ways as pinion 3.
