Sheave for Fibre Ropes Points : Sheave for Fibre Ropes Fibre ropes are generally circular in cross-section. Groove angle of pulley for rope drives is generally 45°. Grooves in pulleys are prepared narrow at bottom and rope is tense among the edges of V-groove to raise the holding power of rope on pulley. Grooves must be finished even to evade chafing of rope. Diameter of sheaves must be large to decrease wear on rope due to inside friction and bending stresses. The suitable size of sheave wheels is 40 d and the least size is 36 d, where d is diameter of rope in cm. The number of grooves must not be over 24.
