Replacing the Shock Absorber Points : Replacing the Shock Absorber The tire and wheel must be removed before replacing the shock absorber. Place the car on jack stands or on a lift. With man suspension systems, a jack stand or lift devices must be placed under the control arm or axle, which will not fly downward when shock is unbolted. Remove the old shock absorber. If the fasteners are rusted, spray rust penetrates, like kerosene oil, on the threads. When a threaded nut and stud are used you will need to hold the stud while turning or tightening the nut.
