Types and Use of Chucks
Points : Types and Use of Chucks, The Dividing Head Chuck, Magnetic Chuck, Rotary Chuck Several different methods are used to hold work-pieces on milling machine for different operations. Similarly some special types of chucks are used to hold the work for milling operations.
These include the dividing head chuck, magnetic chucks, arid rotary chucks etc. 1. The Dividing Head Chuck The dividing head chuck is used for those jobs that are not held between centers, but that do require a holding device like a chuck. The chuck is similar to the chuck used on the lathe, The work may be entirely in the chuck or may be supported on one end by the tailstock center.
2. Magnetic Chuck The magnetic chuck, as used is ideally suited for many milling operations. The use of time consuming hold down clamps to mount the work to the table is eliminated. The magnetic chuck can only be used with metals that can be held magnetically.
3. Rotary Chuck A milling machine attachment consisting of a round table with T-shaped slots and rotated by means of a hand-wheel actuating a worm and worm gear. Some chuck allow the use of index plates for indexing operations, and some can also be fitted with dividing plates that enable regular work positioning at divisions for which indexing plates are not available. A rotary fixture used in this method is more properly called rotary chuck.
