Care and Maintenance of Milling Machine
Points : Care and Maintenance of Milling Machine
The following notes will help to improve the quality of operator’s work and his quality
as a craftsman.
1. Clean down the table and vice (or fixture or dividing head) after each job. A tee slot scraper is invaluable for cleaning the slots or use brush to remove the chips.
2. Oil or grease the machine regularly with the lubricant recommended.
3. Always use the draw-bolt to secure the arbor. Extract the taper by driving it out with a steel bar and not by hammering the draw-bolt.
4. Never tighten or loosen the arbor nut without the overarm support in position; you may bend the arbor. Never put the spanner on the arbor nut when the machine is running.
5. Always clamp up slides not being used to transverse a cut. For this purpose there are generally hand-operated levers on the vertical cross-slides, and a square or hexagon head set-screw on the table. Check also that the overarm and supporting bracket is tight.
6. Do not drop the cutters on to the table or slides. Their edges and corners are very hard and sharp. After having had the collars in a pile on the table (probably amongst swarf), wipe their faces before assembling them back again on the arbor.
7. Ascertain and remember the value of the graduations on the indicating sleeves of. the vertical and cross-slide operating handles. Remember in which direction the table is moving relative of its handle. The first two facts will as sit in putting, on the correct amount of cut; the third may save your putting on cut in a place you did not wash it.
8. Never leave your machine when a transverse is running.
9. The milling machine is classified by the Home Office as a dangerous one. Keep the guard over the cutters, take no liberties and keep hands and tools at a safe distance.
