- To give the limits of an angular dimension and to maintain to accuracy the tolerance is generally Bilateral.
- The difference between the maximum shaft size and minimum hole is known as Allowance.
- Tolerance permissible variation is both plus & minus, it is referred to a Bilateral tolerance.
- A single tolerance value is given preceded by the plus or minus symbol (±).
- In an interference fit, it is the maximum interference and is Negative Allowance.
- A unilateral tolerance is always all plus or minus, either the plus or the minus value must be Zero.
- The term Allowance in limits and fits is usually referred to minimum clearance between shaft and hole.
- When tolerance distribution is on only one side of basic size, it is referred to as Unilateral tolerance.
- In a clearance fit, this is the minimum clearance and is Positive Allowance.
- A Bilateral tolerance is one which allows the variation in both direction from a design size.
- In the case of unilateral tolerances, the dimension is allowed to vary in One direction.
