Manual Rack and Pinion Gear Adjustment Points : Manual Rack and Pinion Gear Adjustment Most manual rack and pinion steering gear have a rack guide adjustment screw. When there is play in the steering first try to adjust the steering gear. Typically, to adjust the rack guide screw, loosen the locknut on the screw. Then turn the rack guide screw slightly to bottom. Back off the screw up to the recommended amount i.e. approximately 45 or until a prescribed turning effort is obtained, tighten the locknut. Check for tight or loose steering and measure steering effort. If not adjusted with in specifications limit then steering gear may require major repairs.
