Advantages and Disadvantages of Permanent Mold Casting

Advantages and Disadvantages of Permanent Mold Casting Points : Advantages and Disadvantages of Permanent Mold Casting Process Advantages
  1. Produces dense, regular castings by high dimensional precision.
  2. Low dimensional tolerances: usually about 0.04” (1 mm}.
  3. Excellent surface finish and grain structure.
  4. Rapid production rate with low scrap loss.
  5. Low shrinkage and gas porosity.
  6. Improved mechanical properties.
Disadvantages
  1. Method is usually limited to production of somewhat little castings of easy exterior design, while difficult castings for example aluminum engine blocks and heads are now usual.
  2. Limitations in casting of elevated melting point metals into metallic molds.
  3. Elevated cost of tooling requires a higher quantity of castings.
  4. Inherent and difficult shapes cannot cast.
  5. Large parts cannot cast.
  6. High cost of molds.
