Points : Resistance, Definition, Unit, Definition of One Ohm, Multiples of Ohm, Factors Affecting Resistance
Definition
Resistance is a measure of apposition to the motion of free electrons i.e. current due to their continues collision with the
atoms of lattice of conductor.
Unit
Unit of resistance is ohm.
Definition of One Ohm
The resistance of a column of mercury of length 106.3 cm having a uniform cross section of one square milli metre and weighing 14.4521 g at 0°C is one ohm. OR One ohm is the resistance of a conductor, when a potential difference of one volt, across it maintains a current of 1 ampere.
Multiples of Ohm
One kilo Ohm(1KΩ) = 1000 ohm(103Ω)
One mega ohm (1MΩ) = 1000000 ohm (106Ω)
Multiples of Ohm
Resistance of a conductor depends upon the following factors.
• Nature of material
• Length of the conductor
• Area of cross section of conductor
• Temperature of the conductor
