Stroke
Stroke
Points : Stroke, what is stroke, Definition
The inside length of the cylinder is called bore. Stroke is the coldness the piston travels
from bottom dead centre to top dead centre. The size of an engine cylinder is referred
to in terms of the bore and stroke. These measurements are used to calculate the
piston displacement.
The bore is always mention first. For example, in a 100 by 88 mm cylinder, the bore is
100 mm and the stroke is 88 mm. In ambassador car engine, bore is 73.02 mm and
stroke is 88.9 mm. In Raldoot motor cycle engine bore is 61.5 mm and stroke is 58
mm. A square engine has bore and stroke of equal measurements. An over square
engine has moderately long bore and small stroke. There are several reason for having
smaller stroke:
(i) Less friction loss.
(ii) Reduced inertia and centrifugal many on the engine bearing.
(iii) Reduced engine height and lower hood line.
