6. Equipment Familiarization 1. Ventilation All welding should be done in well ventilated areas. There must be sufficient movement accumulation of toxic fumes or possibly oxygen deficiency. Where considerable welding is to be done an exhaust system is necessary to keep toxic gases within the prescribed health limits. The general recommendations for adequate ventilation in a minimum of 2000 cubic feet of air flow per minute per welder. 2. Protective Clothing Fire resistant gloves should be used, for most welding operations. For heavy type of work, A fire resisting apron or leggings may be necessary. “Rolled up sleeves and cuffs. In overalls or trousers, pockets in front of clothing should be avoided because sparks may become lodged in them”. Low shoes with unprotected tops are not suitable for work where sparks and slag may get inside. 3. Eye Protection Eye protection with suitable filter lenses is required for all welding and cutting. Regular welding goggles must be used in oxyacetylene welding. In any form of arc welding a shield which protects the face as well as the eyes is necessary for protection. Clear lenses goggles should be used when grinding weld metal, chipping slag off a weld seam. 4. Ear Protection Occupational safety and health Act of 1970 says that the employees be exposed to no more than NINETY DECIBEE of sound during eight hours working day If notice exceeds these levels, then ear protection must be worn. Ear protection (such as specially manufactured muffs) also prevents dust, sparks, chips and fumes from entering the inner ear, thus reducing the possibility of infection or damage. 5. Welding During a welding operation a work-piece should never be placed on The “concrete floor”. Heat may explode a piece of concrete with sufficient force to injure the welder. 6.
