Methods of Investigating Hardenability

Methods of Investigating Hardenability Points : Methods of Investigating Hardenability, Definition Definition The ease with which a steel hardens and the depth of hardness penetration can be investigated in several ways. Perhaps the simplest method is the hardness traverse which consists simply of hardening a bar, cross-sectioning it, and then taking series of hardness readings across the section. A more recent and searching test is the Jominy end quench hardenability test devised by Jominy and Boegehold. Still another method of investigating hardenability is the time temperature-tarns-formation plot which results in curves known as FIT curves, S curves of C curves. The two latter symbols stem from the general shapes of the curves. Each of these methods of investigation in important and together they provide an adequate picture of the hardenability of steel.
