Advantages and Disadvantages of Compound Steam Engine
Points : Advantages and Disadvantages of Compound Steam Engine
Advantages
- Compound steam engines are improved balanced and more regular torque is presented, thus requiring
light flywheel.
- Compound steam engines are cheaper than simple steam engine for similar power output and efficiency.
- Compound steam engine is able of getting started at some crank position due to phase difference
between different cylinders.
- team economy is improved through 10 to 25% at rated load for non-condensing engine and through 15 to
40% for condensing engine.
Disadvantages
- Lubrication necessities are extreme because of increased wear and tear in engine parts.
- Heat losses are extra due to large surface area of compound engines.
- Compound steam engine requires extra maintenance and concentration due to difficulty.
- Compound steam engines are huge and need large space.
