Construction and Working of Lead-Acid AccumulatorPoints : Definition, Construction and Working of Lead-Acid Accumulator, Modern Lead AccumulatorDefinition This is a kind of secondary cell and is used to supply electric current.Construction It consists of a pair of lead plates A and B immersed in a vessel containing dilute sulphuric acid.Working When cell is working, the oxide coated plate A become positive terminal and metal plate B becomes negative terminal and current flows from A to B through the external circuit and from B to A through the acid.
Following chemical action takes place during working.
PbO2 + H2 → PbO + H20
PbO + H2S04 →PbSO2 + H20
Modern Lead AccumulatorIn modern accumulator instead of lead plates, lead grids are used and in the spaces of grids a mixture of lead oxide and
sulphuric acid is used for the anode plate.
