Conversion of Electrical Energy to Mechanical Energy

Conversion of Electrical Energy to Mechanical Energy Points : Conversion of Electrical Energy to Mechanical Energy Electromechanical energy conversion means conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy or mechanical energy into electrical energy.
A device bringing about this conversion may be a generator or motor. All these devices have two main components, i.e. a rotor and a generator or a motor. Another common feature of these devices in that they have a magnetic field system and a system of conductors.
A generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. The mechanical energy input to the generator is provided by a prime mover which may be a hydraulic turbine, steam turbine, gas turbine or diesel engine. This prime mover rotates the rotor of the generator. This causes relatives motion between the conductors and the magnetic field. A dynamically induced EMF is caused in the conductors and this emf appears across the terminals of the generator. If an electrical load is connected to these terminals current flows in the conductors of the generator and the load.
A motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. This electrical energy is supplied to it by the electrical power system. The flow of current in the conductors situated in the magnetic field causes a rotation of the conductors and mechanical power and energy are produced. The rotor of the motor is mechanically coupled to the device run by the motor e.g. Thus the motor take in electrical energy from the electrical power system converts it into mechanical energy and supplied it to the mechanical load.
