Points : Properties of A Good Refractory, A good refractory should posses the ‘following properties: i) Should not fuse at the temperature at which it is used.
ii) Should withstand thermal shock.
iii) Shouldn’t crumble or crack under the prevailing pressure.
iv) Should have low coefficient of thermal expansion.
v) Should not chemically react with metal or slag of the furnace.
vi) Should be perfectly insulating.
vii) Should be impermeable to gases or liquids.
