The non-gelled and alkalized starches, starch acrylic copolymers, wood related products and dairy products are less effective binders but better than bentonite. The highest dry compressive strengths are obtained with binders giving the highest adhesive tensile strength (over 4 Kgs/cm2)on iron oxide lap-joint substrates.
Pellets with 0.1% organic binder show lower compressive strengths and reduction disintegration indices than pellets with 1% bentonite, but they have higher reduction rates. Pellets with carboxyl methyl cellulose and gelled starch e higher softening temperatures than those with bentonite. Specially, the gelled arch is a potential binder with its cost effectiveness, and its pellets have superior metallurgical properties to those of bentonite pellets.
