They always require heat treatment before use. High-carbon steels are highly susceptible to cracking when formed but are resistant to wear and offer some of the highest mechanical strengths obtainable in the carbon steels. High carbon steels are used for springs, sharp cutting devices, and any part of a machine that requires high strength and resistance to wear.
