Points : Face Milling Operation, Operation Sequence Face milling makes use of a cutter that machines a surface at right angles to the spindle axis and parallel to the face of the tool. Face milling cutters over 152.4 mm (6 in.) in diameter are usually of the inserted tooth type and mount directly to the spindle nose. They are used to mill large, flat surfaces. Face mills under 152.4mm (6 in.) in diameter are called Shell Mills and are held on a short arbor. Operation Sequence 1. Select a cutter that is 19.05 to 25.4 mm (3/4 to 1 in.) larger in diameter than the width of the surface to be machined.
2. The work should project about 25.4.mrn (1 in.) beyond the edge of the work. table to provide adequate clearance. In face milling, it is frequently necessary to mount the work on an angle plate.
3. Adjust for correct speed and feed. 4. Slowly feed the work in to the cutter until it starts to remove the material. Roughing cuts up to 6.35 mm (¼ in.) may be taken.
5. Use adequate cutting fluid.
6. Upon completion of the cut, stop the cutter and return the work to the starting position for additional cutting if needed.
7. Make the finishing cut and tear down the setup. Use a brush to remove chips. Clean and store the cutter.
