Potential energy of store water is changed into kinetic energy through first passing it through the penstock pipe. Kinetic energy of water is then changed into mechanical energy in water turbine. Turbine is attached to electric generator. Mechanical energy accessible at shaft of turbine is changed into electrical energy with means of generator. As gravity provides the force which makes water fall, energy stored in water is call gravitational potential energy.
