Types of Boring Machine
Points : Types of Boring Machine, Horizontal Boring, Vertical Boring
Types of boring machines are:
1. Horizontal
2. Vertical
1. Horizontal Boring
In horizontal boring process, the setup can arranged in also of two ways. First setup is one in which
work is fixtured to a turning spindle, and tool is attach to cantilevered boring bar that feeds into
work. Boring bar in this setup have to be extremely stiff to avoid deflection and vibration through
cutting. To achieve high rigidity, boring bars are frequently made of cemented carbide, whose modulus of
elasticity approach 620 x lo3 MPa (YO x 106 lb/in2).
The next feasible setup is one in which the tool is mount to a boring bar, with boring bar is support and
rotate among centers. Work is fastened to a feeding system that feeds it past the tool. This setup can be
use to make a boring process on a conventional engine lathe.
2. Vertical Boring
Vertical boring machine is use for large, heavy work parts through large diameters; frequently the work
part diameter is more than its length. The part is clamp to worktable that rotates relative to machine
base. Worktables able to 40 it in diameter are accessible. Typical boring machine can place and feed
several cutting tools at the same time. Tools are mounting on tool heads that can be fed horizontally and
vertically relative to worktable. One or two heads are mounting on horizontal cross-rail assemble to
machine tool housing over the worktable. Cutting tools mount over the work can be use for lacing and
boring. In adding to tools on cross-rail, one or two extra tool heads can mount on side columns of
housing to enable revolving on outside diameter of work. Tool heads use on vertical boring machine
frequently includes turrets to contain several cutting tools. This results in a loss of difference among
this machine and a vertical turret lathe. A few machine tool builders create the distinction that the
vertical turret lathe is use for work diameters able to 2.5 m (100 in), at the same time as VAM is use
for larger diameters. Moreover, vertical boring mills are regularly applied to one-of-a-kind jobs, as
vertical turret lathes are use for batch production.
